Thira - or Santorini as it is now most commonly known - is a stunning holiday destination for those looking to experience the best of traditional Greece. With its whitewashed houses, blue-domed churches and never-ending vineyards, this Greek island in the middle of the Aegean Sea is a sight to behold. The island is also home to a volcanic caldera, formed by a massive eruption in 1450 BC, which can be seen from the clifftops and offers a spectacular view. The long summer season from May to October is the perfect time to visit and take in the stunning sunsets, which are especially impressive from the northern town of Oia. For those looking for a more affordable holiday, the east coast of Santorini offers a great alternative, with its Blue Flag beaches and watersports in Kamari and Perissa, all within a 20-minute drive of the main town.
