Why not get off the beaten track next year, to an up and coming tourist destination? According to voters in Trip Advisor’s 2016 Travellers’ Choice Awards, hot spots across Israel, Hawaii, the Philippines, Mexico and more, are set to shine.

1. San Jose del Cabo, Mexico
While Cabo San Lucas is home to rowdy beaches and exciting nightlife, San Jose del Cabo is the peaceful little sister just 20 miles south. Spanish colonial architecture, jacaranda trees and art galleries give it a sophisticated feel, which is perfect for a break from the nearby party town. You can snorkel, go whale watching, dive and bird watch at the San Jose Estuary and Bird Sanctuary.
2. Whistler, British Columbia
Whistler has long been the domain of the adventure traveller, with its trendy winter ski season and plenty of hiking, biking and adrenalin-junkie fun to be had in summer. The village is pedestrian-only, adding to its well-known friendly vibe. No matter when you go, you’ll find a hub of locals and international travellers hanging out at bars, restaurants and festivals.
3. Jericoacoara, Brazil
Regular visitors to Brazil’s stunning Jericoacoara probably won’t be happy the enchanting town is included on this list. It’s only accessible via a rough track through the sand dunes and once you get there lagoons, beaches and opportunities for kitesurfing and windsurfing abound. You can chill out all day and join in with the fun nightlife as the sun sets, especially on Por do Sol dune, to see the rare Emerald Sunset.
4. Kihei, Hawaii
Choose to holiday in Maui and Kihei’s sparkling beaches, Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, eco-tours, hotels and restaurants are where you want to be. Swim, surf, snorkel and kayak, charter a fishing boat, buy fresh produce at farmers markets and hit karaoke bars at night.
5. Baku, Azerbaijan
You may not have heard of it yet, but Baku’s star is on the rise. With its charming mix of architectural styles, Persian and Soviet roots and UNESCO World Heritage Sites, there’s much to discover in this thriving, cultural centre. Check out the Flame Towers, the Palace of the Shirvanshahs and the Maiden Tower.
6. El Nido, Philippines
The gateway to the spectacular Bacuit Archipelago, El Nido is on Palawan Island – a paradise of white-sand beaches, turquoise lagoons, coral reefs and abundant marine life. El Nido itself caters for tourists with resorts and restaurants, however this is a place to lose yourself in watery heaven.
7. Eilat, Israel
Situated in the northern end of the Bay of Eilat, this resort city combines a hot climate, soaring granite mountains and pristine waters for diving, snorkelling and marine viewing. Away from the water, you’ll find vibrant bazaars, amusement parks, shops, restaurants and a bustling promenade.
8. Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, Spain
Las Palmas is a popular cruise ship stop, with a cosmopolitan vibe on a backdrop of incredible natural beauty. While it might be tempting to simply laze on the beach in the glorious warm temps, there’s much to discover, including water sports, theme parks, spas, golf and wildlife.
9. Tbilisi, Georgia
A gem sitting pretty between Europe and Asia, Tbilisi enchants with cobbled streets and fascinating architecture, like art nouveau buildings and Eastern orthodox churches. Among the complex history, an edgy arts and culture scene thrives and you’ll find funky bars and restaurants for night life.
10. Jodhpur, India
The magnificent blue buildings of Jodhpur, reside in the middle of the Thar Desert. If you love to shop and can’t quite ever get Aladdin’s Cave out of your head, this is the place for you. Among temples, palaces and fortresses you’ll find bustling bazaars, to fill your own genie bottle with treasures.
