There are many reasons why the UK is a brilliant place for a holiday, and we aren’t the only ones who think so. Character Cottages have put together a real-time counter, which gives us an interesting insight in to the UK travel industry.

When people think of the UK, their first thought is often London, and this is reflected in the 1,550,000 visits to London per month. Visitors want to experience this iconic and atmospheric capital city, but there is also much more to be done in the UK.

There is something very British about spending the day exploring a National Trust house or gardens, and it can be a great way to immerse yourself in history, or to be at one with nature. The National Trust is the largest voluntary conservation organisation in Europe, so it isn’t surprising that they sell over 3.5 million cups of tea per year.

Another very British activity is spending the day at the seaside. Despite not having guaranteed sunshine, our beaches are still very popular.  Over the space of an hour, there are approximately 5,440 trips to beaches.  Could it be the lure of the bracing fresh sea air and fish and chips? Speaking of fish and chips, you won’t believe how much is spent per month on this delicious dish.

There is plenty of interest in sightseeing and going on guided tours, with an astounding 300,000 per day! There is so much to see and do in the UK, that it is advisable to give yourself plenty of time here to make the most of it. Perhaps that is why every evening, 647,222 overseas visitors spend the night here.

The Cotswolds, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), runs through five counties and covers an area of almost 800 square miles. This could be why there are 7,278 visits to the Cotswolds every day. To enjoy the beautiful countryside, why not explore the UK by train rather than car. There are many incredibly scenic train journeys, so you can sit back, relax and enjoy the view. In the UK there are 191,435 train journeys taken every hour!
