Guide to the Canary Islands – Which Island is Best for You

The Canary Islands, an archipelago off the north-western coast of Africa, are known for their beautiful beaches and natural sites, making them one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. What you may not know is that the Canary Islands are actually made up of over 12 different islands. This means that if you are hoping to visit, you may need to choose between islands. So, which Canary Island is best for you? This really depends on what you’re looking for, as each island is different. Here are our picks for the three best Canary Islands to visit, with a bit about what makes each one great.

Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands and offers a lot of variety, making it a strong contender for the best Canary Island to visit. It contains two of the archipelago’s main cities, Santa Cruz de Tenerife and San Cristóbal de la Laguna. It also has beautiful beaches, including the justly popular tourist spots Playa de las Americas (popular among a younger, partying crowd) and Los Gigantes. Tenerife is also famous for its incredible national parks. Loro Park features an abundance of native wildlife, including talkative parrots. Adventurous visitors can climb Mount Teidi, Spain’s highest peak, or sample from a wide selection of watersports. For those looking for a bit of pampering, Tenerife also has some great and well-established resorts, such as Bahia del Duque.

Gran Canaria
Gran Canaria is another large island and is known for a variety of diverse microclimates. Visitors can enjoy fantastic dining and exciting nights out in the capital, Las Palmas, and then catch some sun at a number of beaches. The best-known beach town in Gran Canaria is Maspalomas, which features a large waterpark, golfing, and a beautiful beach flanked my majestic sand dunes. Playa del Ingles and Puerto Rico have a lot of fun bars, restaurants, and lively tourists. For a quieter, relaxing beach, you could try visiting the beautiful Puerto Mogan. Gran Canaria is also a fantastic place for nature and sports enthusiasts. In addition to water sports, there are vast networks of hiking and biking trails all over the island.

Lanzarote is the best Canary Island for those who want to explore incredible landscapes. Lanzarote is one of the most ancient islands of the Canaries and is characterized by volcanic landscapes. In fact, the entire island is recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Travellers can visit sites such as Timanfaya National Park to hike volcanic landscapes, find otherworldly vistas, and even see an active volcano. Fans of art and architecture will also enjoy seeing the work of Cesar Manrique, a famous architect and environmentalist who designed building and artwork all over the island.
