Miami is one of the world’s most popular holiday hotspots, boasting the trendy nightlife of South Beach, plush hotels with celebrity guest lists, the extravagant Art Deco District and bustling Little Havana. With so much abundant luxury, it can be notoriously expensive, so we’ve put together a list of 10 things you can enjoy for free, in Florida’s party town.
1. The Beach
Miami certainly has its fair share of beaches with white sand and stretches of glittering turquoise ocean. Head to Bal Harbour Beach, home to 5 star hotels and a shady jogging path, Miami Central Beach to skate along the elevated boardwalk or join the party at South Beach, famous for its vibrant atmosphere and iconic, multi-coloured lifeguard towers.
2. The Biltmore Hotel
On Sunday’s, you can enjoy free, hour-long tours of the historic Biltmore Hotel’s beautiful grounds and suites. The Biltmore Hotel was one of the most fashionable resorts in the Jazz Age, hosting royalty, presidents and movie stars.
3. Live Jazz at MOCA
The last Friday of every month means free outdoor concerts and admission by donation at the Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami. The museum includes works from US and international artists, including John Baldessari, Dan Flavin and Louise Nevelson.
4. Street Festivals
For live music, street vendors, food, activities, dancing under the stars and arts and crafts, head to one of Miami’s regular street festivals, including Viernes Culturales and Big Night in Little Haiti.
5. Free Movies
You can watch a mix of classic and new release films at the Miami Beach SoundScape ExoStage, a 2.5 acre public park, every Wednesday night at 8pm – for free! It’s located on the corner of 17 street and Washington Avenue.
6. Museum Visits
Expand your mind or take the kids on a museum adventure for free! You can visit the MDC Museum and Galleries of Art and Design for concerts, lectures and events, The Jewish Museum every Saturday and the Miami Children’s Museum on the third Friday of every month for interactive activities.
7. Free Walking Tours
Free Tours By Foot allows you to explore the Historic Art Deco District, with 800 structures of historical significance, including famous hotels and mansions such as Casa Casaurina, once the home of Gianni Versace. You can also check out South Beach and Little Havana.
8. Cables Art Walk
Cables Art Walk, along Ponce de Leon Boulevard, is on the first Friday of every month. The galleries are open for free from 7 – 10 pm and there’s even a free trolley service to make art-hopping easy.
Scenic Bayfront Park, a 32- acre public park in Downtown Miami, offers Yoga in the Park for free every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday for advanced yoga fanatics or beginners wishing to learn.
10. Explore Little Havana
Home to Hispanic culture, exploring Little Havana along Memorial Boulevard is completely free. You can see the Calle Ocho Walk of Fame, the eternal flame at the Brigade 2506 Memorial, monuments, colourful murals, art galleries and quaint restaurants in amongst the vibrant Cuban community.
