Without further ado, here are 5 top-notch annual music festivals in Europe.
Download Festival, England
The most popular heavy metal and rock festival in England, Download festival has been held annually since 2003 at Donington Park, Leicestershire. It has hosted some of the biggest names and cult-status bands in metal and rock – Whitesnake, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Aerosmith, AC/DC, Motley Crue, ZZ Top, Guns N’ Roses, and Linkin Park. The festival takes place in June, and the 2015 edition was comprised of 5 stages – the Main Stage, Zippo Encore Stage, the Maverick Stage, Jake’s Stage, and Dog’s Bed Stage. The 2016 Download Festival will take place between 10-12 June, and the sounds of Korn, Megadeth, Rammstein, Nightwish, Black Sabbath and Deftones will be roaring from the main stage.
Wacken Open Air, Germany
What started as a small event for local bands in 1990, turned into a big open-air heavy metal music bonanza with about 80,000 festival visitors. The Wacken Open Air festival is held in Wacken, a small farming village situated 50 miles northwest of Hamburg. The festival continues to survive even with minimal corporate sponsorship and without various upgrades and VIP access. Visitors can only purchase a three day ticket, without a single-day ticket option. Each year, Wacken transforms from a small village into a large festival venue with an infrastructure designed to handle tens of thousands of fans and multiple stages. Each stage has its own video wall, and there are five more freestanding video walls scattered around the venue. W.O.A. is a truly spectacular event that offers tons of fun and great heavy-metal music.
To switch from festivals that echo with guitar riffs to electronic music, we must mention Mysteryland, held in Haarlemmermeer, the Netherlands. It was established in 1993 and was the first of its kind at that time. The festival has gone international, with the first edition outside the Netherlands being held in Chile in 2011, and the second one in the USA in 2014. Mysteryland was founded and is held by ID&T, a Netherlands-based promoter. Traditionally held on the final Saturday of August, the festival is an attraction to people from all around the globe because it has welcomed a countless number of renowned DJs, such as Junkie XL, Junior Jack, Benny Bennassi, Richie Hawtin, Felix da Housecat, Armin van Buuren, Paul Oakenfold and Paul van Dyk. The Netherlands is also known as a country where one can freely enjoy and learn about cannabis, and the country is one of the main producers of cannabis in the world. Cannabis smoke spreads freely in front of Mysteryland stages, making the trance music experience more unique and different.
Serbia’s Exit festival was crowned the ‘Best Major Festival’ at the 5th annual European Festival Awards in 2014. The festival is held in a medieval fortress of Petrovaradin in Novi Sad, Serbia’s second largest city. Exit is a host to a vast array of internationally acclaimed performers in almost every musical genre. For those of you who do not know, Exit was founded in 2000 and started as a student movement against Slobodan Milosevic, Yugoslavia’s then president whose rule left the country impoverished and isolated. Its founders wanted to motivate young people to overthrow the Milosevic regime by taking part in democratic processes. Since then, Exit has achieved mainstream success. It will take place between 7-10 July, and visitors will have a chance to hear Wiz Khalifa, Nicky Romero, Solomun, Stormzy, Ivy Lab, Ms Dynamite, and DJ Hype, among many others.

We will jump from Serbia right to their neighbor, Croatia. Outlook festival takes place in an abandoned Roman fortress in the Adriatic sea, situated near the city of Pula. The people behind the whole organization do not mess around when it comes to bass music. By that we mean you will not hear any commercialized soft sound that major labels try to stuff mass audiences with. It does not matter whether we are talking about grime, dub, reggae, hiphop, techno, or minimal – the fans will get true underground quality music. The festival lasts for 4 days at the very beginning of September, with a program staggered around on 4 stages. Names like Run The Jewels, Jurrasic 5, Madlib, Flatbush Zombies, Shy Fx, High Focus, Soom T, Ivy Lab, Mefjus, Rahmanee, Filip Motovunski, Beenie Man and Noisia present their top-quality acts.
Choose a festival that suits you. Do you want authentic rock and heavy-metal in western European venues, quality bass music while swimming in the Adriatic sea, or a cannabis inspired trance experience in the Netherlands. Make room in your schedule and get your ticket sets on time.
