How to Choose the Right Cruise for you

Choosing a cruise ship is not much different from deciding which delicious food to eat from the on-board buffet! With so many options, it can be hard to know where to start. Picking the
perfect cruise ship for you means taking into account where you want to go, who you’re going with, what on-board options you require and which facilities are most important to you.

Where Do You Want To Go?

Most importantly, decide which destinations you’d like to explore, so you can narrow down the options straight away. Do you want to explore sun-drenched islands? How about discover the historic streets of ancient cities? Perhaps you’d like to visit the Scottish Isles, sail through the Norwegian Fjords or take a longer journey to the Caribbean or the USA?

Many options allow you the best of both worlds, with stops at city ports and islands, over ten or fourteen nights, or even longer trips. On the flip side, you can choose short cruises and travel to Amsterdam for the weekend or hop over to St Peter Port and discover the Channel Islands in a few days.

Once you’ve decided where you want to go, you can take your pick of an incredible array of ships to suit every cruise holiday desire. The next step is to research which ships cater best for your travel party.

Cruise Ships For Families

When you’re traveling with the family, especially small children and teenagers, it’s important to ensure you choose a ship with plenty of on-board activities to keep everyone occupied while you’re out at sea. Many of the larger ships have everything from circus schools and multiple swimming pools to games rooms, organised children’s activities and dedicated shows for kids.

A great choice for children of all ages is Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Epic, with water slides, costume characters, organised activities and a rock-climbing wall. Best of all, it has a casual atmosphere suited to families and plenty of on-board fun for the adults as well, including restaurants, bars, clubs and live night time entertainment.

Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas also have a huge range of family-friendly activities on offer. You’ll enjoy swimming pools, hot tubs, rock climbing walls, an ice skating rink, kid’s clubs, nursery care, in-cabin baby sitting and adults-only venues for when the kids go to bed. There are family-sized cabins and dining options for every age group.

P&O’s Ventura is always a popular choice for families, with a huge area dedicated to children and a circus school! The little ones are well catered for also, with separate rooms and activities for younger children. There are four swimming pools, hot tubs, sports courts for tennis, basketball, cricket and golf, interactive talent shows and a large range of restaurants with flexible dining times.

Disney Cruise Lines have the most intensive activities program, catering to very young children. With themed play areas, interactive games rooms, karaoke, computers, children’s swimming pools, waterslides and the Walt Disney Theatre, the kids will never actually want to leave.

Cruise Ships For Fun and Adventure

Whether you’re just married and want to mix romance with fun nights out, a group of friends looking to party, or travelling solo, there’s a cruise for you with so many options you’ll have trouble doing them all.

Carnival Cruise Lines are well known for lively entertainment options, vibrant bars and spectacular shows. You can expect to see magicians, Vegas style shows, themed pubs, comedy clubs, dancing waiters, day and night interactive activities for adults and plenty of new friends to join in with the fun!

Norwegian Cruise Lines offers big scale entertainment and nightlife venues. The Norwegian Epic boasts an adults-only beach club with a big screen TV, bar and pool. Plus, they host themed dress up parties that are sure to start your night with a bang, before you hit clubs, bars and lounges.

Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas dazzles with spectacular production shows, gaming in Casino Royale, Acrobats in the Aqua Theatre, adults-only swimming pools, themed parties, bars, lounges, nightclubs, a jazz bar, a comedy club, a karaoke bar and a disco.

The Celebrity Eclipse, from Celebrity Cruises, is a fun-filled ship with an incredible array of options to enjoy on board, including theatre shows, live music, comedy shows, swimming pools, whirl pools and hot tubs, a casino, restaurants, a fitness centre, a cinema, a solarium, a nightclub, a basketball court, a card room, wine workshops and dance classes.

Cruise Ships For Relaxation and A Taste of Luxury

If you want to experience the glamour of old-world cruising, when formal dinners were the rule rather than the exception and ballroom dance parties eclipsed rollicking nightclubs, you can still find them.

Holland America prides itself on serving you as if you were in a luxury hotel and offers a range of award-winning restaurants, beautiful state rooms, relaxing spas, enrichment classes such as cooking and dancing, a casino, live shows, movies and youth programs.

Cunard Cruises offers air-conditioned state rooms and suites with en suites, a nightly turn down service and a room steward. They serve traditional afternoon tea in the Queen’s room, display Shakespeare classics and spectacular musical productions in the theatre, host jazz concerts and have sports courts, art galleries and shops.

Fred Olsen Cruises are smaller in size and they offer old fashioned entertainment like singing and dancing cabaret shows, a friendly atmosphere, a library, special interest programs for enrichment, classes ranging from gardening and wine appreciation and ample space to rest, relax and finish that bestseller you’ve been wanting to read all year.
