Early attempts to colonize it had failed, and the population decimated several times during its years of European and Colonial exposure, yet each new resettlement had made it stronger. It glimmered with the prospects of great wealth, but often resulted in great defeats through the forces of nature and through the interventions of others. It has been battered by hurricanes, ravaged by nineteenth century wars, crushed under depressive years, yet each time, it rebuilt.
