White sand beaches, a tropical sun, the murmuring waves of a gentle sea are what attracts visitors to Cancun. The Glistening City receives over twelve million guests a year, adding a festive atmosphere to its magnificent coast. Flights to Cancun leave daily from the Gatwick and Heathrow London Airports, whisking you away into a region where you forget about time and you never feel cold.
At the very minimum, your flight into Cancun will be a 10 ½ hour trip. Regardless of when you schedule your holiday, the first time you step out into Cancun’s open air, the heat will hit you like a ton of bricks. Cancun is hot year round, with an average temperature of 28C where the coastal breezes keep it cooled down. The clothing you were wearing to stay comfortable in London will probably feel too warm when you arrive in Mexico. Either pack a change of clothing in your carry-on bag that you can slip into before arriving at the airport, or dress in layers so you can strip down.
Very few carriers offer a direct flight. The most prominent of these is British Airlines, although by shopping around, you may find other options. A direct flight with British Airlines will constitute just under nine hours of flying time. The majority of the airlines chart their travel plans with one-three stops. Your arrival in Cancun can take up to nineteen hours, depending on the flight pattern and number of stops.
Because of the length of the trip, you will have a far more comfortable flight if you choose a travel plan that includes some amenities, such as roomier seats, food services, wired entertainment and lounge access. A business class or first class seat will cost more, but unless you’re a seasoned veteran in long-distance travel, you will have far fewer aches and pains from sitting in a cramped seat for so long and you’ll be saved from hours of boredom.
If you have a tendency to develop motion sickness, you’ll definitely need to take along medication. Your air travel will be primarily over water, and in clear weather, you’ll see it below you. Depending on the weather, you could encounter air turbulence that generally is nothing more than a vibration, but can sometimes cause a short, sudden drop in altitude. It’s nothing to be alarmed about, but it can add to the woes of motion sickness.
Cancun International Airport is one of the busiest in the Caribbean, and is the entry point to “Mundo Maya”, with its fascinating ancient history and culturally distinct people. As an international Port of Entry, it complies with standard procedures for foreign visitors. Upon your arrival at the airport, you will be guided to the Immigration Reception Area. Be prepared with all your documentation, such as passports, visas, tourist cards or other identification criteria.
After you are checked in by immigration, you may proceed to the luggage claim area to pick up your luggage. Once you have retrieved it, continue to customs. Your luggage will pass through a scanner and an officer will ask for your customs declaration form. With everything in order, you may now enter the arrivals gate and begin your tropical holiday.
The Cancun International Airport is located 22 kilometres southwest of Cancun. There are no trains available from the airport, but they do have local busses. The busses leave every fifteen minutes and are a twenty-minute drive. You should have Mexican currency ready if you wish to take the bus. You can exchange currency in London or arrange an exchange on line. The rate for the local busses is MXN 40, or £1.8
Another option for arriving at your hotel is by taxi. Taxis in Mexico do not have a uniform rate. If you even look like you’re contemplating a taxi, you will find a string of drivers all promising an “especial” rate. You’ll receive your best fares if you know how to speak Spanish and how to haggle over prices.
Not all those who offer transportation services are licensed or registered with a company. Anyone with a vehicle might decide to do a little moonlighting as a taxi service for an income boost. Most taxi drivers have scruples, but you still need a little savvy and know a con when you see it.
